Dr. D V Deshpande / Director, BIRD
Dr. D V Deshpande has taken over as Director of Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD) Lucknow on 23 February 2015. He is a senior executive of NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development)- which is an apex development finance institution for agriculture and rural development. - with over 30 years’ experience and is at present on deputation to BIRD. Before coming to BIRD, he headed NABARDs Regional offices in Haryana (Chandigarh) and Bihar (Patna) where he managed all the activities of NABARD, viz; developmental (Self Help Group, Farmers Club, Financial Inclusion, farm and non farm sector promotional programmes, etc.), business (refinance, direct finance and supporting state government under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund) and supervision (conducting inspection of Rural Financial Institutions). He had also headed “Off Farm Development Department” in Head Office of NABARD at Mumbai. He also established Programme Management Unit (PMU) at Dahod (Gujarat) under Indo-German Watershed Development Programme supported by German Development Bank – KfW. He was intensively involved in Natural Resource Management and livelihood generation programmes like watershed development, ‘Wadi’ (orchard) model of tribal development, Umbrella Programme on Natural Resource Management (UPNRM) etc. As a Faculty Member at Bankers’ Institute of Rural Development (BIRD) he was instrumental in designing and conducting numerous training and capacity building programmes in the field of project appraisal, management development, Organisation Development Initiatives etc. He also has experience of working in State Government of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Agricultural University and an NGO (BAIF Development Foundation, Pune, Maharashtra). By way of education he is and MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad; MVSc and CAIIB. He has undergone training also at Harvard Institute of International Development on Risk Appraisal of Projects.
